A day with an oyster farmer

During a tide, embark on the boats of professional oyster farmers and fishermen and discover the daily life of rigorous and exciting professions.

The profession of oyster farmer or fisherman in the Arcachon Basin will no longer hold any secrets for you thanks to this experience, told by Léa, a young woman from the Arcachon Basin.

One Friday in June, it is 7 a.m. when I join Clément at his cabin, “Perlostréa”, on the oyster port. The young oyster farmer and his brother welcome us with a big smile and a coffee before taking us on board his barge: the tide won't wait!

The colors of the sky and the pool mix without us being able to distinguish their contours. The sea is calm, and we sail peacefully towards the oyster beds where oysters are grown. Although I grew up here, I am discovering for the first time behind the scenes the production of oysters that we are used to enjoying all year round, which requires more than 3 years of work before finishing in our plates. The two oyster farmers played along and answered our many questions.

We arrive at the breeding grounds operated by the two brothers. The tide goes out little by little, and as soon as the area is accessible on foot, work can begin. Don't forget your boots, which will be essential for you to be able to move around without any hassle!

It is then time to put bags in the water, turn others over, recover some to bring them back to the cabin: it is physical work, carried out all year round in all weathers.

After several hours of work and observation, it is time to return to the oyster port, not without tasting a few oysters with our valiant guides!

It's an adventure that I would recommend to locals and vacationers alike: a total immersion in a captivating profession, sometimes restrictive but 100% authentic. An unforgettable experience!
